EDEN and its Housing First coalition partners were thrilled to host a press conference by U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown at our Liberty at St. Clair building, on December 4, 2013, to announce the Homeless Veterans Protection Act.
Senator Brown’s plan supports the Department of Veterans Affairs goal of ending veteran homelessness by 2015. While significant progress is being made, many hurdles still exist for homeless veterans wanting to find housing. Senator Brown chose Liberty at St. Clair because 30 percent of the residents are veterans, and because of the long standing relationship with the Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center.
During the event, Senator Brown took a tour of the building, held a discussion with eight veterans and spoke about the importance of ending veteran homelessness with the press and a crowd of Housing First supporters.
Arvell Sullivan, a veteran and resident of Liberty at St. Clair also spoke during the press conference.
Success in Numbers:
Less than two percent of EDEN's Permanent Supportive Housing tenants return to homelessness.
Nearly all of EDEN's Permanent Supportive Housing tenants engage in support services, and over half participate in volunteer, educational, or employment activities.
Rates of hospitalization and emergency room visits decrease after entering EDEN Permanent Supportive Housing programs.
