It might be winter, but one employee makes it “sommer” all year round.
On Jan. 13, Sommer Mann was named the agency’s first employee of the month in recognition of her positive attitude and unending willingness to help. Whether she’s answering calls, assisting clients or opening mail, Sommer is always there to lend a hand without being asked.
While her position doesn’t necessarily require that she helps out at the reception area, that never stops her. “At times, the reception desk gets swamped,” says Cindy Megrey, the agency’s office manager. “Sommer steps in and lends a hand when she sees the need.”
According to management, Sommer also shows patience and grace when dealing with the public, and she’s usually wearing a smile no matter how busy the day. Megrey says Sommer is “bright and cheerful” and always makes the day pleasant.
“It makes me feel appreciated,” Sommer says of the award, “and that I’m holding up my end of my responsibilities.”
She Came, She Saw, She Stayed
Sommer came to EDEN in August 2004 as a temporary employee to fill in for the previous DOD application processor. At first, she primarily worked with the emergency assistance funds, but she took on more responsibilities over time and now handles all the DOD programs. She became a full-time employee in February 2005.
“The people and staff were part of the reason I decided to work here full-time,” she explains. She noticed that the EDEN management give more feedback than she received in previous positions. At other organizations, she says, employees can work really hard and not be sure if anyone notices or appreciates it.
As DOD application processor, Sommer helps disabled families access emergency rental assistance funds to prevent eviction, pay a security deposit or prevent a utilities disconnection. The job requires her to work closely with clients, caseworkers and landlords. “I talk to them all day,” she says. “I make sure they have everything I need so I don’t have to turn anyone away.”
Clearly, Sommer always gives it her all, but she’s not too busy to express her appreciation to those who named her employee of the month.
“It’s a real motivator that people notice you’re working hard,” she says.
